Thankful Thursday: The Dentist
I screwed up, ya'll.
It's Katie, and I'm here to make a confession. I am religious about my regular dentist visits, but I was horrible about flossing the past 6 months. I went to the dentist this week and the hygienist broke the news that I need gum scaling and root planing in a couple areas. This is basically a deep cleaning of the disease in my gums below the gumline, usually requiring a local anesthetic. Gum disease, untreated, can cause bone and tooth loss and isn't something to mess around with.
I am so thankful for trips to the dentist. As insane as it sounds, I've grown to love my appointments. First, I always go right after work and get to lay down with my feet stretched out on the accommodating dental chair. It always makes me sleepy. Then, the hygienist cleans my teeth, which is kind of like getting a mani or pedi in my opinion. After that, the dentist checks in. I've been going to the same dentist for years, and he's a man of few words, but always remembers me. Before I leave, I get a brand new toothbrush and floss inside a little plastic pouch that I take traveling with me. Who doesn't like free stuff? The receptionist who helps me make my next appointment knows who I am. It all feels so familiar and safe. But most of all, I am thankful for the technology and resources available at the dentist office that allow me a fresh start after I suck at flossing. I feel so blessed to have another chance. I know not everyone in the world has that privilege, and I want to do better and more fully value the incomparable gift of teeth.
So, the quote board on my wall will serve as a daily reminder for the next 6 months of how thankful I am that I get dental care. It will also remind me to floss so next time I can avoid the cost and time it takes to repair the damage done by gum disease. I also might not be so lucky next time- the damage could be irreparable if I continue in the bad habits I've formed.
So, if you haven't done so recently, thank that special dentist or hygienist in your life!
