Mental Health Monday: Superstition
Little known fact about OCD, especially scrupulosity: sometimes, a person with said brain illness is superstitious about certain numbers. Because my brand of scrupulosity is intertwined with morality, I started becoming superstitious of the number 420- a number associated with marijuana, Hitler’s birthday, the Columbine shootings, etc. I was convinced I was seeing it everywhere- especially on the clock in my car- and I figured it must mean something bad for me or about me. After my treatment this summer, I decided to do an “opposite action” and I purposely set my alarm clock for 4:20 a.m. on the mornings I go to the gym at 5:00 a.m. Take that, OCD! My paranoia has diminished, but I still think it’s funny to send pictures to my mom and sisters whenever I see the number. —Katie
