Thankful Thursday: Kindred Spirits

Image may contain: 4 people, people smiling, people standingToday on #thankfulthursday , I am grateful for kindred spirits. So what’s a kindred spirit, you might wonder? To me, a kindred spirit is someone who “gets” you. Of course her personality is different from yours- sometimes much different. But she understands your heart. Your spirits connect in a way that can’t be explained. When I was 2 weeks shy of my 18th birthday, I moved in to the Chipman Hall dormitory at BYU. In the bed across from mine, in the room directly underneath mine, and in a room down the hall from mine lived three kindred spirits. We were all born within three months of each other and moved to Utah for college from California, Connecticut, and Wisconsin. Over the next six years, we were roommates with one or two of the other off and on and, together, navigated our way through career choices, dating and first kisses, missions, and more. 17 years, 6 degrees, 3 husbands, and 10 kids later, we still feel as young as we did back then every time we get together. This is further proof to me that our spirits don’t age- only our bodies do! In 2013, we started making it a point to reunite every other year somewhere in the U.S. On Saturday, we will begin our 4th reunion. Our visits are brief while their children are young, but they are always exactly what our hearts need. We’ve been there for each other through some pretty significant trials and we know we will weather many more. But no matter the distance or time between us, our hearts are always united. And I count that as one of my greatest blessings.
